Mat hardness is not a feel-it-and-guess property. It determines how a mat absorbs impact, how stable it is underfoot, and whether it is right for striking, grappling, or throws. That is why we measure it with a Shore hardness tester, the standard instrument for quantifying exactly how firm a material is.

In this video, we run Shore hardness testing on our mats, and we are measuring two different things. The first is the hardness rating of each mat type, so every product has a verified number behind it rather than a vague description like "firm" or "soft." The second is consistency: we test multiple points across a single piece of mat to confirm the hardness is uniform throughout. A mat that measures soft in the middle and hard at the edges is a quality control failure, even if its average number looks right.
